Memoranda

Notes for 1918

There have been many deaths of people that I knew during the year and the new year already that touched me deeply. On New Years day Tom Sloan died of Pneumonia and on the 2nd Mrs Priscilla Jennings died. She was a dear friend and a member of the Relief Society Board. Her funeral was Saturday the 5th at the home. The Suffrage Ammendment passed the house Thursday the 10th I rejoice.1 {p. 347}

Footnotes

  1. [1]“On this day, in the midst of World War I, the House passed a constitutional amendment granting women the right to vote by a count of 274 to 136. . . . The Senate, however, failed to pass the amendment in the 65th Congress (1917–1919), so the measure was once again reintroduced in the House in the 66th Congress (1919–1921), passing on May 21, 1919, by a vote of 304 to 90. The Senate concurred shortly afterward. The 19th Amendment then went to the states, where it was finally ratified in August 1920.” (“The House’s 1918 Passage of a Constitutional Amendment Granting Women the Right to Vote,” History, Art & Archives, U.S. House of Representatives, accessed 30 Aug. 2021, https://history.house.gov/Historical-Highlights/1901-1950/The-House-s-1918-passage-of-a-constitutional-amendment-granting-women-the-right-to-vote/.)
