Introduction, 1862 or Later

The diary in which Emmeline recorded her entries for 1844, 1845, and 1846 had a number of blank pages. Her second daughter, Melvina Whitney, listed some family data on one of those pages, perhaps around 1862. Emmeline also inscribed family data. Information recorded at some point includes the names of Emmeline’s three husbands and her six children, with information about marriages and sealings, births, and deaths. Information was also recorded for some Woodward siblings and their spouses and children.

Note that the diarist’s name appears in these early pages as “Emeline,” with one “m.” She changed the spelling of her name to “Emmeline” in midlife to distinguish herself from Emeline Young Wells, daughter of Daniel H. Wells and Louisa Free.¹

This portion of the diary is dated herein to “1862 or Later” because Louisa M. Wells, listed here, was born in 1862. It is possible some of this material was inscribed before 1862.
