  4. [4]During most months of the years 1903 and 1904, EBW recorded three sources of income in her cash accounts: church, tithing orders, and salary. While she did not fully explain the nature of the first two items, diary entries show that until the end of 1910, she regularly hosted meetings of officers of the Primary Association and the Relief Society general board since they had no meeting places of their own. These groups, as well as other groups like the Reapers’ Club, paid her a small rental fee to use her office for their meetings. (See EBW, Diary, Memoranda, Cash Account, June 1903.) The church might have paid such a rental fee through orders on the Tithing Office as well as in cash. “Salary” refers to a monthly stipend given by the Relief Society general board beginning in 1902. Biographer Carol Madsen explains that Bathsheba W. Smith, Relief Society general president, offered this payment to the board secretary and treasurer in summer 1902. “Emmeline responded that she had promised herself that if she served for ten years as secretary, only then would she be willing to accept remuneration for her service. The ten-year period would be up in three months, by October 1902.” (Madsen, Intimate History, 405, citing Minutes of the General Board, 4 July 1902.) EBW recorded receiving “10 cash” from “Relief Society” in January 1903 and “R. S. Salary 10 cash” in February 1903. These sums continued under “Salary” in subsequent entries.
