Sister Emily S. Richards [. . .] was pleased that we had present, Sisters E. R. Snow Smith, Zina D. [H.] Young, [. . .] and others, whom we shall be pleased to listen to.

Sister E. R. Snow Smith said she had not language to express her interest in the improvement of the young ladies. We read, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This is the great foundation, and each must form her own character. You want to know if this is the same Gospel our Savior taught. In ancient times signs followed the believer. The same cause will produce the same effect in all ages, young ladies can understand this, as well as older ones. You have the same access to God, but it requires strict obedience to His laws. God has placed within your reach, all that is required to make you the most perfect, noblest, and purest of all young ladies on the face of the earth. You are at the head by right of birth. You should become practical women; every girl should become a good housekeeper. You each expect to become a wife, and a mother, and each should try [p. 108] to have the happiest home. A woman who does not understand housekeeping cannot have a happy home. First then become housekeepers, then add all other accomplishments you may desire, and there will still be a proper balance. We want you to become as polished stones in Israel. The spirit of God makes all things beautiful. Those are happiest who contribute most to the happiness of others. She then spoke in favor of testimony meetings. Said she was the first to organize Improvement Associations & knew it was done by inspiration. Prayed that all might grow in grace, and in the knowledge of God, and become bright and shining lights in Zion.

Sister E. R. Snow Smith was the next speaker. She gave excellent instruction pertaining to life and health, showing the evil effects upon the system of wearing shoes with high heels. She said they derange the whole system. The circulation of the blood is retarded by throwing the weight of the body on the toes instead of on the ball of the foot. She then spoke of signs following the believer, of the gifts and the blessings in the Church and concluded by blessing all present, by the gift of tongues, which was done so beautifully, and in such an angelic manner, that none could doubt the presence of the Holy Spirit. The interpretation was given in the same heavenly manner by Sister Zina.
