Hyrum Relief Society; Hyrum, Utah Territory
Miss E. R. Snow Mrs E. [Elizabeth A.] Davis of Salt Lake City & several Ladies of Wellsville also [. . .] on the Stand. [. . .]
[. . .] Sister Snow addressed the congregation. I am not capable of edifying you, but God is able to assist me. Sisters we came into this world for a purpose. we came to fill a mission, is it not strange for Women to occupy the stand when there are Brethren present! it is because we have a duty to perform. God has ordained the R. S. Sisters when we are united we are a power in Zion. Your report is very good. it shows that you have done much good. but there is one subject that it is silent upon the salvation of souls, but there is a record kept in Heaven of every act both good and evil: it is our duty to overcome the evil propensities of our natures. we all have trials to meet. it is our experiences that we take behind the vail. [p. 9]
Guard against false sympathy always use a good influence we are called to be Saviors on Mount Zion. it is the interest of our brethren that the Relief Society should prosper.
Congratulated us on our homemade hats invited all who had on homemade hats to rise to their feet a great majori<ty> arose. I am proud of you my sisters. Counseled us to set out Mulberry trees. also to make our own clothing. & to be very particular and make their homemade dress for it is made with pure hands. also wished us to be dilligent in storing grain. it was right to glean but use wisdom there is a virtue in labor. we are Organizing the children in Society’s but it is a nice matter to find capable teacher’s for them. We wish it to coopperate with the Sunday School. Sisters don’t let your daughters go to Salt Lake to work. rather clothe them in sheep skins & keep them from the temptations of the City.
bore a very strong testimony to the purity of Poligamy. Said I started in it when but few believed, & covenanted to obey the commandments of God & have always endeavored to do so to this day. Thank God I have never spoke against the principle. There is no more important ofice than that of a teacher in the Relief Society, if the sick ask them to anoint & Minister to them it is their duty to do so.1 Concluded her remarks by asking the blessing of God on the faithful.
