Democratic caucus met and nominated Speaker and other officers. Delegates from Territories (Democratic) admitted, but not allowed to vote.
6 December 1875 • Monday
House met to-day. Macpherson, Clerk of last House, called the House to order, called the roll, declared a quorum present. M. C. Kerr elected Speaker. Members and Delegates sworn in. No objection made to me, though Baskin was present. If there was any intention to object, the discussion on Louisiana case would have prevented. (which see)

Accepted invitation to visit Centennial buildings at Philadelphia. A large train. Was assigned to Girard House and carried there in carriage through <street> illuminated by lights from mansions on route
18 December 1875 • Saturday
Visited buildings in carriage with Mr. Bradley of Mich and Col. Tayler, first Controller of Treasury. Mr. Harris of Phil. one of Com. had us in charge. The buildings are magnificent. Partook of splendid banquet in Horticultural Hall. Went to New York. Met <Bro> John W. Young, returned with him to Philadelphia.

Spent day at Mr. Canfield’s John W’s brother in law. In evening took train to Washington.

House met. Committees announced by Speaker. House adjourned till Wednesday, Jan. 5/76.

Busy writing letters all day

Writing letters. Received a letter from Col. Thos A Scott, President of the Penn. Central R.R., enclosing passes for myself to Chicago and from that city to Washington by way of New York, excepting from Phildelphia to Baltimore. Bro. John W. Young had written to him asking them for me. I returned my acknowledgements to Mr. Scott for them.
23 December 1875 • Thursday
Expecting letters from home respecting my wife, Elizabeth’s starting for Washington. Received none from her, but a very good letter from the President. I telegraphed to know if she could start on Saturday morning and I would meet her at Omaha. My brother Angus replied that she and Mary Alice had started that morning in company with Bro. Staines and Bro. Brigham, Jr.

Wrote to Pres. Young and to my family. At 7.40 p.m.
started for Chicago. A very rainy day.
25 December 1875 • Saturday
Telegraphed to Bro. Staines from Pittsburg that I would meet them at Chicago. I did this for fear he should take some other route.
26 December 1875 • Sunday
Reached Chicago this morning. Stopped at the Clifton House. Went to McVicker’s Theatre and heard Prof. Swing who has had difficulty with the Presbyterians, of which Church he was a minister. He has set up an independent church. The day was wet but the place was crowded. I was disappointed somewhat in the address. There was very little light in all he said. Worldly wisdom, what folly much of it is. With such a guide, people would never find God. His language was good; but he has an affected style. Met Bro. Brigham Young, Jr., Bro. Staines, my wife Elizabeth and daughter Mary Alice at the Depot. They were well and we were very glad to meet. Went in evening to Gen. Chetlin’s house, and spent an agreeable time; Mrs. Chetlain was quite unwell. I had met him in the morning at the meeting and he pressed me to call upon them.
