December 1873

1 December 1873 • Monday

[I prayed to God in my temple clothing.]1 I called upon him mightily in prayer to help me. This is a great comfort to me. I am here without a man who is in sympathy with me; but I have a Friend more powerful than they all. In this I rejoice. I feel there are angels with me, and as one of old said they that are for us are more than they who are against us. When I pray I feel comforted and filled with joy. Of myself I feel very weak; but in my Lord I feel strong. Called at office of Mr. White correspondent of N. Y. Tribune who told me of Maxwell and Howell calling upon him to get Maxwell’s side as he describes it published in the Tribune, Mr. White told them he would not publish there [their] side alone. He would publish theirs as soon as mine, and mine as soon as theirs, but neither one alone. They did not like this and Maxwell whined out that he did not want the Tribune to favor the Mormons and go against him, &c[.] He is a miserably low creature as are his associates.

A man by the name of Digges wrote me a letter on Saturday desiring an interview with me at the Tribune office. He wished me to infer that he could give me valuable information and help as he knew Maxwell’s plans. The letter did not strike me favorably. I showed it to Mr. White and asked him about Digges and who he was. He had been out to Salt Lake City, and had come and offered to sell Mr. White news about Maxwell’s case to publish. Mr. W. made the same reply to him that he did to Maxwell. He appeared then to be all on the latter’s side. Then he said he could interview me. Mr. W. told him that if there was anything of public interest in the case stated fairly he would buy it. Mr. W. thinks him a “dead beat” and that he it was who sold to the N.Y. Herald the infamous dispatch which appeared in the Washington correspondence of that paper on Saturday. Digges came to me on the floor to-day before the House was called to order and told me what great influence he had with members. I treated him very coolly. He has a smooth, plausible address and could easily impose on an unsuspecting person. For the particulars of the organization and the discussion over my being sworn in I will refer to the minutes as published. I felt profoundly thankful to the Lord and praised him with all my heart. How blessed it is to be his servant!
