James Young Kanehoa

1797 — 1851

Half-brother of John Young; his father was a British sailor who became a trusted adviser to Kamehameha I after having been captured by the Hawaiians in 1790; accompanied Kamehameha II on his visit to England in 1823; member of the board appointed to quiet land titles prior to the passage of the Great Mahele in 1848; governor of Maui when GQC arrived in islands, a position previously held by both his father and half-brother; died while in office.
