Joseph Smith Richards, a cousin of George F. Richards, was born on 4 October 1848 at Blacks Fork near Fort Bridger, to Willard Richards and Sarah Longstroth. In 1873, he began studying medicine at Bellevue College in New York City at the request of Brigham Young. Richards married Louise M. Taylor. He served as the first medical director of the LDS Hospital after its establishment in 1905. Richards died on 30 October 1914 in Salt Lake City.[1]
