Ida A. Husted

18 February 1851 — 14 March 1931

Born 18 Feb. 1851 in Fairfield, Franklin Co., Indiana.[1] Daughter of John Arthur Husted and Cassandra S. Stoddard.[2] Attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana, 1867.[3] Taught school; became principal of the high school in Peru, Miami Co., Indiana.[4] Married Thomas W. Harper, 28 Dec. 1871, in Delaware Co., Indiana; one child.[5] Wrote articles and a column titled “A Woman’s Opinions” for the Terre Haute Saturday Evening Mail, 1872–1882, and a monthly column titled “The Woman’s Department” for the Locomotive Firemen’s Magazine, 1883–1894.[6] Divorced, Feb. 1890.[7] Secretary of the Indiana Woman’s Suffrage Association.[8] Editor in chief for the Terre Haute Daily News, 1890.[9] Member of the Indiana Press Club and delegate to the National Editorial Association, 1892.[10] Wrote a monograph for the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, 1893.[11] Moved to Santa Clara, Santa Clara Co., California, and managed press relations for Susan B. Anthony during the California suffrage campaign, 1893–1896.[12] Selected by Susan B. Anthony as her official biographer; resided with her in Rochester, Monroe Co., New York, 1897.[13] Published The Life and Work of Susan B. Anthony, 1898–1908; signed copies of two volumes and inscribed them “to the women who were loyal to the end of her great work” and “to the Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the first organized charity.”[14] Chair of the International Council of Women’s Press Committee, 1899–1902.[15] Met with EBW in London, 12 July 1899; corresponded with EBW, 1900–1902.[16] Edited volume four of the History of Woman Suffrage with Susan B. Anthony, 1902; wrote volumes five and six, 1922.[17] Delegate to the International Council of Women, 1909–1922.[18] Author of Suffrage Snapshots, 1915.[19] Chair of the National American Woman Suffrage Association’s publicity committee, 1916–1919.[20] Died 14 Mar. 1931 in Washington DC; buried in Muncie, Delaware Co., Indiana.[21]
